A few thoughts on van life and what’s next

Absolutely no regrets

This year we will celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary. Considering that N. and I are still together after having lived 24/7 in a 20-foot van, from now on I will claim credit for 37 years.

***

We had never before spent one day in a van.

When our children were growing up, our vacation schedule was dictated by their school holidays, so we ended up spending our vacations in places that could be reached easily by cars or planes. The goal was to get there and get a bit of a break from the hustle-and-bustle of our daily routines. As N. and I spent our days driving around the country, one of our constant conversation refrains was, “Why did we never take our children to national parks?!?”

Our national parks are absolute treasures. We will sing their praises wherever we go.

***

I really missed baking sourdough loaves, milk bread, roll cakes, chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls, trail mix, roasted chicken, meatloaf, sheet pan dinners, our usual Thanksgiving meal.

***

Water is precious. Sunsets are gorgeous. Nature is beautiful.

***

For now we have decided to hold off putting down roots and setting a base. From the road, N. will continue taking pictures and I will continue writing and updating our blog.

Our next adventure begins October 7, 2023.
