Reconnecting with old friends — that’s what bridges do
We stopped in San Francisco to visit friends we had not seen in many years. It was wonderful to reconnect and our late night conversations offered a wonderful opportunity to catch up with news about our lives, our families. As for N. and me, we were reinforced in our resolution to work harder to keep in touch with those we cared about, even if they lived far away.
On the one full day we had in the city, we walked around the Presidio/San Francisco National Park at the Golden Gate. We didn’t do any tours and the usual urge to read educational plaques abandoned me for the day, so we just admired the views: the cluster of buildings in the far downtown area; Alcatraz sitting in the middle of the bay; and the Golden Gate Bridge covered by the quintessential fog, as if it had been ordered especially for our visit. The park was crowded because it was the weekend, with a mix of locals staring at the vistas with a nonchalance that gave them away, and the tourists like us gawking at the same views.
Ever since we made plans to visit San Francisco, N. had been dreaming of having good sushi; his dreams came true. As for me, I dragged him into a bakery in the Richmond district, famous for the Swedish Princess cake, a dessert I discovered on an episode of The Great British Baking Show. It tasted as good as it looked! (And this from a non-dessert person.) We were even.
