The Badlands Can Be Good: A Photo Album

Right outside the boundaries of the Badlands National Park, a few places allowed for “boon docking”: sites that let self-contained vans and RV’s park overnight for free — some for up to fourteen nights. See first two photos below, taken from our chosen spot: it was one of the most beautiful sites we’ve ever parked in.

We had reservations to get to in the east, so we took the scenic drive through the national park (Route 240), which included lots of viewpoints. On this particular day, the area was blanketed by a hazy film in the air, courtesy of the Canadian wildfires in the north.

The Badlands always remind me of the time my children were young, when we listened to the books-on-tape version of “Walk Two Moons” by Sharon Creech.
